Shifting Sands: Memories of Moreton Island was conceived by members of the Moreton Island Protection Committee to record the memories of those who share an association with and love of Moreton Island. Between 2000 and 2002 members of MIPC conducted and recorded a number of interviews with such people covering a wide range of topics including first memories of Moreton Island, favourite places, memorable characters on the island, and conservation. Historian Margaret Cook was commissioned to produce a manuscript from the interview transcripts.
As a contribution to oral history, this publication preserves the humour and character of the many and varied contributors through the stories of their work and recreation. Production of the manuscript was funded by a community history grant from the Brisbane City Council. The author, Margaret Cook, would like to acknowledge the assistance of MIPC members, and in particular, Julie Dean, throughout the project.
